Document Accessibility

Accessible documents, prepared and checked by production specialists.

lab.h provides accessibility remediation and document preparation for PDF/UA, WCAG, and Section 508 requirements. We prepare and remediate documents according to applicable accessibility standards and client requirements.

What remediation covers

An accessible PDF is one that assistive technology, such as a screen reader, can interpret in the right order and with the right meaning. That depends on the structure inside the file, not only on how the page looks.

  • PDF accessibility remediation
  • Tagged PDF
  • Document structure
  • Reading order
  • Heading structure
  • Lists
  • Tables
  • Links
  • Alternate text implementation
  • Forms
  • Metadata and document language
  • Accessibility quality assurance

Standards we work to

PDF/UA

The ISO standard for universally accessible PDF, covering how content must be tagged and structured inside the file.

WCAG

The Web Content Accessibility Guidelines, applied to documents at the conformance level your organization requires.

Section 508

United States federal accessibility requirements for electronic documents and communications.

How we approach it

Start at the source when possible

When the InDesign or Word source is available, we build accessibility into the file so each new export needs less remediation.

Remediate the PDF when it is not

When only the PDF exists, we tag and correct the structure directly in the file.

Check with tools and people

Automated checks find part of the picture. Our QA also includes human review of reading order, tables, and alternate text.

Accessibility applies to every language version. We remediate multilingual and right-to-left documents alongside the English originals.
